Stephen J. Ferrando, MD is Edith Har Esh Professor of Psychiatry, Director and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Westchester Medical Center Health System and New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York.
Dr. Ferrando attended Northwestern University Medical School, did his psychiatry residency training at the University of California, San Francisco and subsequently did an NIMH-funded HIV/AIDS research training fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Ferrando has focused his clinical work and research over the past 27 years in the area of Psychosomatic Medicine. In that context, he is an expert in psychiatric diagnosis and psychopharmacology and has done important work in designing systems of psychiatric care for patients with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and neurological diseases. His research has focused on psychiatric epidemiology and treatment of mood disorders and other quality of life symptoms in patients with these comorbid psychiatric and medical/neurological conditions. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and is a peer reviewer for journals that span multiple medical and psychiatric specialties.
Dr. Ferrando is Editor-In-Chief of “Neurobehavioral HIV Medicine,” a peer-reviewed journal addressing the neuropsychiatric complications of HIV/AIDS. He is also co-editor of “Clinical Manual of Psychopharmacology in the Medically Ill,” published by the American Psychiatric Press, Inc., the second edition of which was published in 2016. Dr. Ferrando is past president of the New York Area Society for Liaison Psychiatry and is a Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. He has been very active as a long-term member of the Commission on HIV/AIDS of the American Psychiatric Association and has presented nationally and internationally on the neuropsychiatric manifestations of HIV/AIDS.
Over the past 10 years, Dr. Ferrando has expanded his focus to administrative psychiatry, having served as Vice Chairman for Psychosomatic Medicine and Departmental Operations as well as Vice Chair and Associate Medical Director for Clinical Programs at the New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center’s Westchester Division. In 2014, Dr. Ferrando was appointed Director and Har Esh Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College and Director of Psychiatry at the Westchester Medical Center Health System. Over the past three years, he has overseen the expansion of the Department from one hospital to 8 hospitals, including multiple inpatient and outpatient programs for the treatment of Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders.
Dr. Ferrando has always had a passion for and dedication to the education and career development of physicians in training, having initiated multiple innovative educational programs and having mentored countless residents and medical students. He has received numerous teaching awards for his efforts and considers such recognition to be among his proudest achievements.
